Background of the study:

Tourism in Obudu Local Government Area has grown significantly, bringing both economic opportunities and environmental challenges. The influx of tourists has led to increased pressure on natural resources, including water, flora, and fauna (Okonkwo, 2023). While tourism contributes to local development and cultural exchange, it can also result in habitat destruction, pollution, and resource depletion if not managed sustainably (Ijeoma, 2024). The study examines the balance between tourism development and environmental conservation, focusing on the impacts of increased visitor numbers on natural ecosystems. It considers both positive outcomes, such as raised environmental awareness and revenue generation for conservation projects, and negative effects like environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. By evaluating current tourism practices and environmental policies, the research aims to propose sustainable tourism models that minimize environmental impacts while maximizing economic benefits (Okonkwo, 2023).

Statement of the problem:

Tourism in Obudu, while economically beneficial, poses significant threats to the natural environment due to increased resource consumption and environmental degradation. Inadequate sustainable practices have led to habitat loss and pollution. This study seeks to assess the environmental impacts of tourism and identify strategies to promote sustainable tourism practices (Ijeoma, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the environmental impact of tourism in Obudu.

To identify the main challenges associated with tourism-related environmental degradation.

To propose sustainable tourism models that balance economic and environmental interests.

Research questions:

What is the extent of tourism’s impact on the natural environment in Obudu?

What are the primary environmental challenges caused by tourism?

How can sustainable tourism practices be implemented to mitigate negative impacts?

Research Hypotheses:

H₀: Tourism does not significantly impact the natural environment in Obudu.

H₀: There is no significant relationship between tourism activities and environmental degradation.

H₀: Sustainable tourism models will not significantly reduce environmental impacts.

Significance of the study:

This study is significant as it examines the dual impact of tourism on economic growth and environmental sustainability. Its findings will guide policymakers and tourism operators in developing practices that protect natural resources while promoting local development (Okonkwo, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is limited to the evaluation of tourism’s impact on the natural environment in Obudu Local Government Area, excluding broader tourism development issues in other regions.

Definitions of terms:

Tourism: The activity of people traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for leisure or business.

Natural Environment: The physical, chemical, and biological elements that occur naturally in a region.

Sustainable Tourism: Tourism that considers its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities.
